2017 Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep Cars, Trucks, and Minivans
March 28, 2016
Though we sometimes sound certain, this page is generally not based on official statements and in any case any future product plans are subject to change.
Barracuda / Avenger / Alfa Romeo Coupe and Convertible
A new mid-sized rear-drive platform is being developed in Italy, by a mix of engineers from the US, Italy, and (probably) India. One question is whether the large Chryslers and the Maseratis will use this architecture, which was designed to go from compact to large cars; Maserati has its own LX-based family now.
SRT Barracuda
A midsized Dodge convertible was shown in Nevada, dubbed “Barracuda,” with a coupe to accompany it. This car would be V6 powered but a Pentastar V6 twin turbo with V8-style power is under development.
We believed earlier that the Barracuda name has been rejected now and replaced by Avenger or Dart, because the car will not be “retro themed,” and those questioned did not think the vintage Plymouth name was appropriate on a modern-themed Dodge. This might still be the case, and the use of any name is not definite at this point, despite the title attached to it at the presentation. It will be at least two years off.
In any case, both the sedan and coupe/convertible would have rear wheel drive and possible optional all wheel drive.

Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200
A Dart GLH was shown in Nevada in August 2015; this uses a four-cylinder turbo generating 300 horsepower and would be a major boost above current Darts, though not an SRT-like best-in-class car. The Dart is, however, to be replaced, probably in the 2017 calendar year, by an import from an un-named “partner.” So is the Chrysler 200. (Timing is uncertain on both.)

Jeep Compass and Patriot (“Compatriot”)
2014 jeep compass
(See 2016 for Jeep Compass.) Renegade is to be refreshed in calendar-year 2017, Cherokee in 2016, and a new Compass with Grand Cherokee-like styling, on the Renegade base, is due late in calendar year 2016.
Jeep Wrangler
2017 jeep wrangler
The next Wrangler is due for calendar-year 2017. The windshield and grille rake do not appear to be as severe as in the rendering above, and there aren’t many apparent major changes aside from the transmission, roof, and roof supports.
Minivans, Crossovers, and SUVs
Chrysler is set to get a midsized and full-sized crossover in calendar-years 2018 and 2017, respectively. The full sized crossover is almost certainly based on the Pacifica minivan. The midsized one may be based on a cross of the Cherokee and 200, or a smaller version of the new minivan platform used by the Pacifica
Dodge Caravan may change completely for 2018, becoming a crossover; in any case, the Dodge Caravan will continue alongside the new Town try until mid-2017, after which Chrysler may or may not take over the Caravan name in Canada and possibly in the US.

Jeep Wagoneer
2013 Jeep Wagoneer
Wagoneer (technically, Grand Wagoneer) debuts around 2018 after five years of rumors; essentially a Dodge Durango with the Jeep suspension and traction control systems, it will start above the Durango and Grand Cherokee Summit in price. “Something to give wealthy Grand Cherokee buyers a bit more space and cachet.” (See the original Wagoneer.) Sergio Marchionne indicated that the Wagoneer or a Jeep above it could reach $100,000. We suspect it will be the Wagoneer, with a supercharged Hemi V8, hybrid-electric system, or other exotic powerplant, with all the bells and whistles.
The Grand Cherokee itself is to be re-engineered, not just refreshed, in mid-2017, finally leaving the chassis jointly developed with Mercedes.
Durango gets refreshed in early 2017 (CY). If Durango sales are strong, it’s also possible we will see three cars on the same basic chassis (Grand Cherokee, Durango, Wagoneer). See our news discussion...

New Ram
Ram shows a refresh for calendar-year 2015, which is puzzling and probably reflects the model year update that has already taken place. That leaves 2017 for the much-rumored “PUG” Pentastar engine upgrade.
Minor updates to the Heavy Duty pickups and Chassis Cabs are due for calendar year 2016, with a major Ram 1500 update in 2017. Major updates to heavy duty pickups and chassis cabs are due in 2018. (The dates appear to be calendar years.)
dodge ram five year plan
Ram will be split into Ram and Ram Commercial; most likely the differences will include speed governors and heavy duty vinyl seats on the Commercial series, with fewer create comforts and more fleet features.
Chrysler 100 and other small cars
A compact Chrysler 100 was due in calendar-year 2016, as a 2017 model year compact car likely using the SUSW (Small US Wide) platform, an American adaptation of the old SCSS setup shared with GM, with a new line of Fiats. A Fiat concept, the Aegean, was could be fairly easily modified to have the current Chrysler 200 design cues. It is most likely that the two cars will not be sold in the same region and the Chrysler is unlikely to use the Fiat engines. We do not know the current status of these projects, reportedly set for Toluca.
Dodge was set for a “B-sized” (subcompact) sedan and hatchback in early 2018.
Journey
Journey is set for a mid-2016 refresh, with a Journey SRT coming out shortly after. We are thinking that the next Journey (2019-2020?) might be a rear wheel drive design. Alfa Romeo is planning one, and as Sergio Marchionne said, Alfa could never be cost effective on its own; it seems to be paired with Dodge. (That would also make the SRT version easier to create.)
Large cars: 300C, Charger, Challenger
Chrysler 300C and Dodge Charger were originally thought to use a double-wishbone front suspension similar to that of the (loosely LX-based) Maserati Ghibli. Chrysler would have modified the suspension geometry, mounting, materials, and tuning, re-creating it to better suit their needs and cost constraints, but it would provide a much lighter ride than its heavy-feeling predecessors. Now, there is a likelihood that Charger and Challenger will move over to the new, smaller rear wheel drive setup.
The powertrain should include the Pentastar V6 and eight-speed ZF automatic. The fate of the Hemi is unknown with one source claiming it will stop at 2018 and others saying it will continue for trucks. We are unaware of a new V8 program but a smaller V8 would be consistent with other automakers.
2016 dodge charger
There is still a possibility that the 300C will move to front wheel drive, providing more interior space with the same exterior footprint, and differentiating Chrysler from Dodge and Alfa Romeo, both of which will have similar cars. The Chrysler would emphasize space, ride, and luxury, while the other various brands would emphasize performance. The car would be based on the Pacifica, as Volkswagen Phaeton was based on Touareg.
Small pickups
The Brazilian-built Fiat Strada pickup has a payload capacity of 1,550 pounds, and a five-foot, six-inch long bed. The extended cab has a 1,500-pound payload and a four foot, six-inch bed. Towing capacity is said to be 2,000 pounds. A Ram 700 version is sold in Mexico but none is expected for the US. There is a new Ram based on the Mitsubishi L200 under development which will likely be used outside of the US and Canada (the L200 was sold as the Dodge Ram 50 in years gone by).
